The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
