The Former President's Regime of Punishment and Favor

Trump's voracious appetite for revenge has swiftly evolved into a structured system. Over the year since his election, the chief executive's rage and caprices have taken on the guise of official policies in ways reminiscent to earlier dictatorial systems. Government personnel who do not cooperate are promptly fired and substituted by loyalists. Opposing officials who challenge him encounter indictment, trial and punishment. Opponents have been labeled under presidential memoranda as “anti-American”, “anti-Christian” and “anti-capitalist”, and menaced with legal action as “extremists”.

The Justice System Transformed

All case involving targeting of critics and immunity for supporters demonstrates its own particular features. But, notwithstanding their specific nature, they exemplify expressions of what has developed as a systematic technique. Such events are far from isolated. His removal of DoJ prosecutors and FBI personnel, accompanied by his placement of devotees in key posts, started quickly, promptly assumed a consistency, and has now been formed into a structure. Federal prosecutors and the Federal Bureau have been remade into partisan bodies under Trump's clear direction to execute his demands. Wrongdoing has been made standard. It constitutes the apparatus of revenge.

Administration is preoccupied with punishing the leader's alleged enemies than they are with defending our national security.

Within the Structure

The beginnings of this framework has been uncovered in the legal complaint of multiple previous senior Federal Bureau officials submitted in the ninth month in the judicial system in the capital against top official Kash Patel and justice department head another official for unlawful firing in “a campaign of payback against Plaintiffs for what administration figures considered to be a failure to demonstrate sufficient allegiance”. The document states that Brian Driscoll, the former temporary head, details a conversation in which the director “freely admitted the impropriety of his actions”.

The official had attempted to defend law enforcement officers from being terminated, the complaint claims. He advised him that “White House figures” – interpreted by Driscoll to be the executive branch and DoJ – had ordered him to dismiss everyone who they considered as having worked on a legal probe against Trump. The document goes on: “He explained that he had to terminate the people his bosses told him to fire, because his chance to retain his own position was contingent on the ouster of the agents who handled investigations involving the President. He explained that there was nothing he or him could do to stop these or any other terminations, because ‘the bureau sought to incarcerate the President in detention and he remembers.’” After the official informed the director he was breaking the agency's own policies, Patel allegedly said “he understood that and he realized the character of the summary firings were likely unlawful”.

Extensive Impact

Since the director's claimed admission to him, the justice department and the FBI have been dismantled and repurposed for Trump's revenge apparatus. Multiple of the agency's senior executives were terminated or compelled to leave in the early weeks of the government. About 4,500 lawyers at the justice department have agreed to a “voluntary departure plan”. A minimum of several DoJ lawyers, among them those in the southern district of New York, stepped down in protest over what they considered as political interference in abandoning the criminal prosecution against the New York City mayor, a political figure, in return for his collaboration with the administration's federal agency roundups of immigrants. The ethics division of the department, which oversees ethical violations, has been diminished to two attorneys. The rights protection unit has been decimated: seventy percent of its staff has departed. 33% of top officials at the department have quit. The section implementing environmental law has lost 50% its management.

Incentives and Penalties

In the mayor's situation, the acting US attorney for the NY office, the official, quit in dissent against what she described as the “trade-off”. Tom Homan, Trump's “border czar,” appeared as the implementer with Adams on television to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I will return in New York City.”. And, another figure, previously the justice department figure and a former Trump attorney, who brokered the agreement, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a possible stepping stone to the judicial branch.

Trump's exemption for offenses carried out while in government, granted by the unprecedented decision of the conservative on the highest court, thus blocking his legal action over the political violence and preserving his public standing for the 2024 election, is the basis on which he relies to defend his supporters. With such immunity, he has been freed to authorize misconduct. The consequence of the court judgment permeates his presidency and the Republican Party completely. The court matter has escalated.
